mini kiss
ok… mini kiss just made super bowl level… a new dr pepper ad with gene and paul, and mini kiss. i’ll have to ask john and missy how long ago we first laid eyes on mini kiss. something like 10 years. some tiny joint on rivington that once hosted a tori amos listening party… that was way more the vibe than 70’s glam rock. anyway we went knowing nothing but mini kiss would be performing. how could you not go? the place filled up fast as one might think… this was pre hipster lower east side, but this sort of thing has always drawn a crowd here.
oof… take the points in the second quarter.
anyways, the stage was literally an 8x8 alcove behind a hallway leading to the restroom, we were lucky enough to situate ourselves in the front of the mass gathering over the corner. a kick drum represented the only sign that music ever too place in this corner. an hour after advertised, the sea of people parted, starting at the door leading slowly toward the stage. there they were, in all of their glory, mini kiss. i can’t recall what song was first, but i was instantly enthralled. I somehow got it in my mind that these guys were actually going to be playing instruments… nope… im sure they’ve upgraded by now, but they came out with cardboard cutouts of guitars/bass. the drummer just stood behind the kick. kiss songs were played over the bar’s stereo. and mini gene and mini paul rocked the crowd. mini ace and mini peter were entirely a formality… ive seen several stand ins for them over the years. totally felt jipped. sure it was awesome to see these little kiss guys jumping around dressed like kiss… but they could’ve at least sang poorly for us. no one past the third row of people could see anything.
i see they’ve at least got themselves real instruments now.
