nevermind
so whoever owns the Nirvana catalog at this point is releasing some sort of 20th Anniversary Reissue of Nevermind.
This got me thinking. Would it be fair to say that Nevermind heralded the sound of the 90’s? It would also be fair to say that the term “the seattle sound” would also come up in conversation when talking about Nevermind…
Here’s what Im getting at, I think Chicago and the midwest in general gets the shaft when talking about the sonic footprint of the 90’s. I would say that Nevermind has more to owe for its sound to Butch Vig than any pacific northwest influence. Nevermind sounds a lot more like Gish than it does Bleach. Oh yeah, lets not forget about that final Nirvana record… recorded by another midwesterner Mr Steve Albini. Shit Albini’s sound is all over lots of “important” records that conjure up the sounds of the 90’s. Engineers like these and bands like the Flaming Lips & Smashing Pumpkins have more of that sound than any of the Melvins records.
SO why do we remember Seattle as the sonic stamper? In retrospect Seattle was way more of a fashion show to the real sound being developed across the midwest.
i mean really, which record would you rather listen to today?
“ten” or “transmissions from the satellite heart”?
